Urology Specialists of Cypress provides compassionate care for all aspects of prostate health, from routine exams to advanced treatments for complex conditions.
In our Cypress, Texas, office, board-certified urologist and prostate health expert Dr. James Stocks and our experienced team have the expertise to maximize men’s health and quality of life. Prostate screenings play a critical role — they literally save lives.
One recent study, which focused on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, revealed that prostate screenings prevent 1 death in every 11-14 men who receive a prostate cancer diagnosis. In black men, who have an elevated risk of prostate cancer death, this effect was particularly notable.
If you’ve been wondering whether prostate exams are necessary, this blog is for you.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, but early detection greatly improves the likelihood of successful treatment. When discovered in the localized stage (confined to the prostate gland itself), the five-year survival rate for prostate cancer is greater than 99%, according to the American Cancer Society.
Regular prostate screenings also allow Dr. Stocks to identify other potential concerns, such as noncancerous conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH or enlarged prostate), in their earliest stages. By catching these issues early, you have more options for effective, minimally invasive treatments.
We understand that the idea of a prostate screening can be somewhat intimidating, but the process is straightforward and Dr. Stocks conducts the tests with gentle, compassionate care. Here’s what you can expect:
This blood test measures the level of PSA in your blood. An elevated PSA may indicate problems like inflammation, infection, or possible prostate cancer.
If your blood work shows an elevated PSA level, the next step is typically an ExoDx Prostate test. This simple urine test can accurately assess your risk of developing clinically significant prostate cancer, without the need for a digital rectal exam or a prostate biopsy.
Once Dr. Stocks orders the test, you can collect the urine sample in the privacy of your own home. If your ExoDx Prostate test score is under 15.6, you likely won’t need further testing. However, a score of over 15.6 may indicate the need for more advanced testing.
Dr. Stocks uses this noninvasive approach to gain valuable prostate health insights so he can guide you in proactive prostate treatment if needed.
Determining the right time to start prostate screening depends on your risk factors and overall health. General recommendations include:
Men at higher risk of prostate cancer, such as those of Black race, men with specific genetic mutations, or those with a family history of prostate cancer, should consider starting screenings in this age range. A family history involving first-degree relatives or multiple generations affected at a young age increases your risk significantly.
Men in this age group benefit the most from routine prostate screening. Dr. Stocks recommends beginning screenings after a detailed discussion of the risks and benefits, allowing you to make an informed choice about your care. The American Urological Association recommends screening in this age group every 2-4 years.
Routine screenings are generally not recommended for men over 70, especially those with a life expectancy of less than 10 years. However, men in excellent health may still benefit from screening, and Dr. Stocks can help determine if it’s right for you.
Dr. Stocks combines your health history and current medical needs to create personalized prostate screening recommendations.
